BOOKBINDING – RESTORATION

The collections of the library comprise late 19th and early 20th century books among which the noteworthy collection of Marie Blanche. Their bindings represent a valuable resource for information about the circumstances of their production while the choice of materials and techniques reflect aesthetic choices, economic and social conditions, and technological developments in the material culture of their times. This material throws light into the world of book production, linking past and present, thereby providing us with valuable insights into the study of the book both as text and object.

Part of the collection has been conserved or restored by Veronique Magnes and the Bookbinding Workshop of Babis Lengas – “Foinikas Publications” that specialize in the study of bookbinding and the production of bindings inspired by the Greek tradition of the craft. The conservation and restoration of the books was made possible through the generous support of the AMKE AIGEAS and Athanasios Martinos.
